Memphis Police Association Endorses Councilman JB Smiley Jr. For Shelby County Mayor

SHELBY COUNTY, TN — The Memphis Police Association (MPA) has officially endorsed Councilman JB Smiley Jr. in his campaign for Shelby County Mayor, highlighting his longstanding advocacy for law enforcement and dedication to public safety.

“Smiley has been an advocate for MPA and a big supporter of law enforcement for several years,” said MPA President Matt Cunningham. “He will do a fantastic job as the next Shelby County Mayor.”

Smiley accepted the endorsement during a press conference on Tuesday at MPA headquarters, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between community leaders and law enforcement to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.

“Public safety is not only about enforcement but also about building trust, ensuring accountability, and working together to create safer neighborhoods,” said Smiley. “As Mayor, I will continue to support our officers and invest in the resources they need to protect and serve effectively.”

As Chair Emeritus of the Memphis City Council, Smiley demonstrated his commitment to public safety by leading efforts to address gun violence through local initiatives. In 2024, he spearheaded a lawsuit against the Shelby County Election Commission after it removed three gun control measures from the November ballot. These measures, which included requiring handgun permits, banning assault-style rifles, and implementing red flag laws, were aimed at reducing gun violence in Memphis.

Despite facing opposition from state officials, Smiley and the City Council persisted, and Memphis voters overwhelmingly supported the referendums. Following this, Smiley announced plans to craft a trigger law ordinance based on the voters’ support, further demonstrating his dedication to addressing gun violence and enhancing public safety.

“We don’t need more promises—we need results,” said Smiley. “This campaign is about delivering real solutions to the challenges our communities face every day.”
