AFSCME Local 1733 Endorses Councilman JB Smiley Jr. For Shelby County Mayor

SHELBY COUNTY, TN – Memphis American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 1733, one of the largest and most respected labor unions in the region, formally announced its endorsement of Councilman JB Smiley Jr. in his campaign for Shelby County Mayor on Tuesday, April 29th, 2025.


“Councilman Smiley doesn’t just talk the talk, he shows up when the cameras aren’t around,” said AFSCME Local 1733 President Adrian Rogers. “He listens, he advocates, and he has a proven track record of standing with working families in Shelby County.”

Councilman Smiley expressed his deep gratitude for the endorsement, emphasizing the vital role unions play in strengthening communities. “Labor built this country and continues to be the backbone of Shelby County,” said Smiley. “It means everything to have the support of AFSCME Local 1733. I stand with our workers because I’ve seen firsthand the value they bring and I believe leadership means showing up especially when no one is watching. We will fight for better wages, safer workplaces, and the respect every worker deserves.”

With the endorsement of AFSCME Local 1733, Smiley continues to build momentum among grassroots supporters and key local institutions. This marks the second major endorsement Councilman Smiley has received since announcing his candidacy for Shelby County Mayor.
