Councilman JB Smiley Jr. To Officially Kick Off Mayoral Campaign With Major Endorsements and Countywide Tour

SHELBY COUNTY, TN — Councilman JB Smiley Jr. will officially launch his campaign for Shelby County Mayor on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, beginning with the release of his official campaign announcement video at 7:00 AM on all major social media platforms and at www.votejbsmiley.com. Smiley’s announcement follows a full day of key events, including a prayer breakfast with faith leaders, a press conference with the Memphis Police Association, major endorsements from prominent labor unions across the county, and public kickoff event at the Halloran Centre in downtown Memphis.

The day will begin with a Prayer Breakfast at 7:30 AM at Cafe Eclectic, gathering faith and community leaders to center the campaign in purpose, unity, and service. Later, Smiley will receive the public endorsement of the Memphis Police Association, further signaling broad support for his leadership vision on public safety, community investment, and effective governance. Additional labor unions, AFSCME and IBEW Local 474, will also announce their support during afternoon events.

At 5:30 PM, supporters, elected officials, and community members will gather at the Halloran Centre (225 S. Main St.) for the official Kick-Off Celebration. Smiley will outline his vision for a safer, more prosperous, and more equitable Shelby County. The evening will include three events: a Host Reception, the Kick-Off Fundraiser, and “The Alpha Hour” — an evening networking celebration.

“Shelby County deserves leadership that listens, that builds bridges, and that delivers results,” said Councilman Smiley. “This campaign is about creating a future where no one is locked out, just because they can’t afford a way in and making sure we are safe in our homes and communities. Not later. Not eventually but now.”

Following the kickoff, Smiley will launch the “Do Something” Meet & Greet Tour — a series of 16 grassroots events across Shelby County neighborhoods, starting May 7 in Downtown Memphis and continuing through June 2025. The tour is designed to connect directly with residents, listen to community concerns, and engage new voices in the electoral process.
