ATTY JB SMILEY, JR ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR SHELBY COUNTY COMMISSIONER, DISTRICT 8
Offers a vision that includes advocacy and action for fully-funded public education, livable communities, greater access to healthcare, a reduction in crime and an increase in economic prosperity for all.
MEMPHIS, NOVEMBER 18, 2017 – JB Smiley, Jr., principal attorney at Smiley & Associates, will publicly announce his candidacy for Shelby County Commissioner in District 8 on November 20, 2017 at Local Gastropub (95 S Main St, 38103) in Downtown Memphis. The event begins at 6:00 PM and the agenda will include prominent pastors, past and current elected officials and close friends.
Smiley, a native Memphian, will address the diverse challenges that impact a district that includes the two poorest zip codes in Memphis (38126 and 38105) and two of the most upscale neighborhoods (Harbor Town and the South Bluffs).
“We need leadership that continues to build upon the tremendous success that Downtown Memphis has seen.” Smiley continues, “Still, our revitalization efforts must extend north and south to our most underserved communities – all within a few miles of Downtown Memphis.”
Smiley believes in an approach to leadership that addresses the root causes of issues faced in District 8 – not merely the sensationalized symptoms.
“We can’t address healthcare challenges without offering greater support to the community clinics and non-profits in the area. We can’t be champions of economic prosperity for all while ignoring the limited jobs, lack of transportation and job skill gaps that adults are facing. We can’t say that children are our future while stripping them of the quality education that they deserve.”
Smiley spent his childhood in the city’s poorest zip code, 38126, and still lives in that area today. Prior to returning to Memphis, he attended Tennessee Technological University and the University of Pikeville on a basketball scholarship before pursuing his juris doctorate at University of Arkansas at Little Rock – William H. Bowen School of Law in Little Rock, Arkansas.
He practices criminal law, general civil litigation, personal injury and administrative law but dedicates an equal amount of time to supporting grassroots causes involving wage reform, youth mentoring and affordable healthcare advocacy. He’s a member of the Tennessee and Arkansas Bar Associations, Shelby County Young Democrats (1st Vice President), NAACP and the YDA National Judicial Council. Smiley is a lifelong member of New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in South Memphis and recipient of the UALR Black Law Students Association 2017 GLO Award.
At his kick-off event, JB Smiley, Jr will debut his campaign website at www.votejbsmiley.com.
